![]() ![]() o-fix-that) explains very well what I was experiencing especially on my old laptop (before I replaced it for this one). Why do you suggest a vm.swappiness of 20? I have 3GB RAM and it's always far from being completely used. How is this incorrect? Also, I think that having a vm.swappiness of 0 and vm.vfs_cache_pressure of 50 actually improved things dramatically but it could just be in my head. I've read everywhere that if you have a lot of RAM and only use swap as a emergency backup that that is what you should have. I do want my swap to only be touched if I run out of RAM which is why I chose a vm.swappiness=0. It has to be "awake" because it runs and downloads stuff usually. If you really do leave you PC unattended and idle for extended periods and it supports suspend then why not use that? My desktop and laptops suspend to RAM instantly (OK about a second) and resume reliably. I do a lot of big file transfers but I have my desktop set up so most big files do not reside on the same physical disk as the OS and I always did the same in Windows for the same reasons, and I offload p2p activity and other long downloads onto other disks and other computers, again for the same reasons. Make sure you use relatime or even better noatime in fstab, that should help quite a lot. There's a whole discussion in that thread, the above is a summary.Īnyway if your disk is busy writing then performance suffers, there's no escaping it. IMHO, the VM on a desktop system really should be optimised to have the best interactive behaviour, meaning decent latency when switching applications." Andrew Morton humorously replied, "I'm gonna stick my fingers in my ears and sing 'la la la' until people tell me 'I set swappiness to zero and it didn't do what I wanted it to do'." Rik van Riel explains, "Making the user have very bad interactivity for the first minute or so is a Bad Thing, even if the computer did run more efficiently while the user wasn't around to notice. The other side of the argument is that if "BloatyApp" is swapped out too agressively, when the user returns to use it he has to wait for it to swap back in and thus detects a noticable delay. Get it out on the disk, use the memory for something useful." You really don't want hundreds of megabytes of BloatyApp's untouched memory floating about in the machine. "My point is that decreasing the tendency of the kernel to swap stuff out is wrong. 2.6 kernel maintainer Andrew Morton noted that on his own desktop machines he sets swapiness to 100, further explaining: The higher a number set here, the more the system will swap. To tune, simply echo a value from 0 to 100 onto /proc/sys/vm/swappiness. Fortunately a run-time tunable is available through the proc interface for anyone needing to adapt kernel behavior to their own requirements. A number of Linux kernel developers recently debated "swapiness" at length on the lkml, exploring when an application should or should not be swapped out, versus reclaiming memory from the cache.

Several changes were made in the last update of PhotoScape. If you’re looking for a photo workhorse without the price tag, PhotoScape should be your first stop. It’s got a practical approach that allows you to change a photo significantly and, unlike an alternative like Picsart, is aimed more at genuine photo editing than making fun photos for sharing online. If you think you can get by without it, then PhotoScape is a great place to start. The truth of the matter, however, is that many of us just don’t need layers in our photo edits. Since Photoshop is a great app (and Photoshop has layers), it’s often taken as a basic necessity when it comes to what’s “good” in an app. When people discuss photo editing apps, one of the first questions to arise is about layers. No layers, but a brilliant app nonetheless That’s not to say that PhotoScape can’t make a professional image - it will just take a little longer to get there since PhotoScape isn’t quite as nimble as its paid-for cousin. It allows you to have all of the fun of editing, with a much less complicated and easier to navigate app. If, however, you just want to make basic edits and have fun with your photos in the meantime, PhotoScape is a great option. If you need the real polish and creativity offered by layers, you’ll probably find PhotoScape a bit lacking. Whether or not PhotoScape is going to work for your image editing really depends on what you want to do, or how professional you require the end result to be. Is PhotoScape a worthy Photoshop alternative? Crop offers you lots of options regarding cropping the image and tools gives you access to more focussed tweaks, like red-eye removal and a clone stamp feature. Object allows you to write on the image, or to insert shapes and symbols on top of it. Home allows you to resize the image and apply all kinds of usual effects, like effects, filters, and average editing options, like bloom, sharpen, and black and white. The main limitation here is that PhotoScape doesn’t support layers, but it does support a lot of other great editing options. The editing options can be further divided into home, object, crop, and tools. When you open a picture in the editor, you’ll see the image in the main screen, a file explorer to the left, and the editing options to the bottom. The app does well, although the editing options are not at the same level as a more complicated photo editing program. Paper print: print images onto lined paper (music, graph paper, etc.)įor many, PhotoScape’s editing abilities are important.Screen capture: take a picture of what’s on your screen. If you return to the home page, you’ll be able to access all of these options, and a few more, namely: Combine: combine multiple images into one.Batch editor: edit multiple files at once.Editor: a basic but useful photo editor. The various photo editing options, as they appear in the tabs are: Here on the home screen, you’ll also be able to access the language options, other options, and some other software by the same developer, namely PhotoScape X for Mac, VideoBlend for Mac, and Morning Kit for Android. Clicking one of the icons around the main PhotoScape icon is one, or you can access them via the tabs that run across the top of the app. On the slightly strange home screen, you’re offered two ways of interacting with the photo editing software. As soon as you choose an option, this will disappear, but it does make your first experience with the app a little strange. That’s mainly because the start screen looks unbalanced since there’s a large image to the right and almost nothing to the left. Once you open the program, you’ll see an interface that looks a little odd. Prints Stock Photos Photography Photo X Ray Image Briefcase Stock Images. So, the computer wiped the SD card clean even though the photos weren’t saved to the hard drive. The photos didn’t import, but OS X thought they did. My sister-in-law was importing photos to her iPhoto library from an SD card and something went haywire. The Scenario: Photos Accidentally Deleted from a USB Driveįor the purpose of this tutorial, I’m going to recreate a real-life scenario using a USB drive. Undeleting photos and videos are just the tip of the iceberg. Together, PhotoRec and TestDisk are a powerful set of free data recovery tools. It’s a companion program to TestDisk, another open-source program that’s long been used by data recovery gurus for repairing partitions and making non-bootable disks bootable again. This defaults to v2 which still has some compatibility issues with PHPStorm. UPDATE JANUARY 2022 - Since v1.18.2 ddev now ships its own docker-compose version.

There’s a Getting Started Guide on the Snapseed website you may want to check out. I want to note this is not a direct comparison. This photo of my son, Cole, was processed in Snapseed. This is how I exported the image out of Aperture I don’t mind using my time experimenting because, when I finally decide to go with something, I feel good about it. Embarrassingly, I’ve spent hours messing about, sometimes only to abandon the whole idea and stay with the straight image. I mostly experiment with portraits and other non-newspaper work. Having said that, I do have fun experimenting with different presets, filters and apps that take a photo in a completely different directions. Too many times, heavy handed post-processing is intended to make a mediocre image better…and it never does. The post-processing gets in the way of the photo. Too many times, I look at a photo with heavy manipulation and and only see the manipulation. My default preference is to see an image, and appreciate it for the content, light, color and composition. Reverse Engineering the Pan/Tilt Servo with an RTL-SDR, and replicating the signal with an Arduino. His post contains the sample code that he used. Knowing this information he was then able to use an Arduino with a 433 MHz transmitter connected to replicate the signal exactly. He then opens the audio files in Audacity which allows him to inspect the signal's structure and determine some important information such as the preamble + payload timing and ON/OFF pattern. To do this he first used an RTL-SDR and SDR# to record the signals generated by each button press of the remote. However, Konstantin Dorohov wanted to be able to control the camera positioning from his PC rather than through the remote control, so he set out to reverse engineer and clone the 433 MHz wireless control signal. Nikon's camera also boasts somewhat higher resolution, and yet a wider sensitivity range, helped in part due to a slightly larger sensor. Its predecessor was a great pic two years ago, but how does the Canon T6 stack up in today's camera market? That's what I wanted to find out in my real-world field test! That means the Canon T6 still boasts a reasonable ISO range compared to smartphones and compact cameras, but has rather sluggish burst capture and a very limited raw buffer. Inside, the entire imaging pipeline from sensor to card slot is essentially unchanged. The Canon T6's polycarbonate body is near-identical to that of the earlier camera, save for the addition of a Wi-Fi status lamp and a few subtle tweaks to styling and labeling.
